The M16A1 was the standard US assault Rifle for over 15 years, and continues to serve in the inventories of many foreign governments. It is an improvement over the original M16, and was replaced by the M16A2, in the US military in the 1980's. The AR-15 is the semi-automatic civillian version of the weapon, and while it is no longer legal to sell to the public, there are many current owners of the weapon, and it is still fairly easy to buy a pre-ban model. In the 90s, M16A1s/AR-15s were purchased in large numbers by many police departments, (like the LAPD), at discount from the military. These weapons tend to be configured to semi-auto fire. With hundreds of thousands of units produced, and distributed around the world, the M16A1 will continue to be a highly effective rifle well into the 21st century.
