The G17 is a 9mm semi-automatic handgun, designed for the Austrian military by plastics expert Gaston Glock in the early 1980s. At the time, the Glock company had no experience with firearms, but managed to put together a team of experts and came up with a revolutionary new weapon for their contract with the army. The Glock 17 was commonly called the "plastic gun", since much of the frame is made up oh high polymer plastics, making the weapon extremely light, yet very durable. Originally, the G17 was seen as a perfect terrorist weapon, as people feared it would be undetectable by metal detectors, yet since most of the weapon is still composed of steel, this has proven not to be the case. The G17 is also extremely durable, and has been put through some of the worst torture tests ever conducted on a weapon. It has been dropped from high altitudes, buried in sand, and frozen. With special ammunition and small modifications, the G17 can even be fired underwater. All Glocks have a unique internal safety system. Unlike other weapons, there is no safety on the outside of the weapon, rather, each of the safeties is disengaged as the trigger is depressed further. The G17 is also able to carry 17 rounds of ammunition per clip, and is capable of good accuracy. Glock pistols have what the vendor calls a "Safe Action." The pistol is operated as if it is double-action-only. There is no hammer, external or internal. Instead, there is a firing-pin tang held by the triggering mechanism. The ready pistol is in a half-cocked state. Squeezing the trigger completes the cocking, then releases the tang. It's trigger pull is consistent, like double-action-only pistols, but the Glock's standard trigger has a lighter pull, similar to single-action pistols. Due to the success of this handgun, Glock has developed a whole range of weapons, which have become very popular with citizens, are in service with around half of US law enforcement agencies, and have been adopted by many militaries. The Glock 17 is used by US Customs, the Miami police, UK police, GIGN, Indian and Austrian militaries, and others.
