The ranges above are generally representative of all full-size pump-shotguns and their compact variants. Shot Shells deal Wn4 +1t at Point-Blank range, Wn5 at Close, Wn4 at Effective, and Wn3 at Long & Extreme. At Close, shooters receive a +1t to hit, and at Effective and beyond, a +2t. Decrease the DL for Shot Shells by 1 when penetrating armor. When using slugs, provide a +1t bonus for rolls upgrading the damage, and a -1t penalty for stabilization. |
The Mossberg 590 is a pump-shotgun design used by police forces all over the world, as well as every branch of the US military, and for hunting and home defense. It is powerful, and reliable within military specifications. While autoloaders are capable of faster fire, pump-action shotguns like the M590 have many advantages. Autos do have a rapid fire rate, but a well trained pump-shooter can keep up quite well, making this advantage a slight one. Pump shotguns are also more reliable, due to their far simpler operating mechanism. When the weapon fails, it is usually the operator's fault, while autos have greater jamming problems. This is not to say that autoloaders are unreliable, they are simply slightly less reliable, especially if not well maintained. The edge that pumps have in this category is slim, but coupled with simple tradition, has kept these weapons very popular. Pumps are also able to reliably cycle special reduced recoil "tactical" bucks or slugs, as well as other specialized ammunition, and being able to fire anything placed in the chamber is something most SWAT units require. While autos like the M3 are becoming more advanced, pump-guns still have one major bonus, price. Often, they cost less than half as much.
The Mossberg 590 Compact Cruiser AOW, is an extremely short version of this weapon. The lack of a stock, coupled with a shorter barrel length makes it rather inaccurate, but the weapon is still used in situations where concealability, (you'd need a big coat, but it can be done) and maneuverability in close-quarters is required. These shotguns tend to be fired from the side, by the hip to halfway up to the armpit. The recoil then spins the shooter to that direction, and on the return swing the weapon is pumped, then fired again
