The SAW, (Squad Automatic Weapon) idea was concieved in 1966, but it has taken a long time to reach service. When the M16 was issued to infantry squads, all infantrymen had an automatic weapon, but with an effective range of some 300 meters, and the capability to run through its ammunition in a few short seconds. The SAW gives the squad fire team a weapon of greater all-round capability than the M16, without the weight and sophistication of the M60. In the 1980's the Belgian Minimi was chosen as the US military's SAW, and has since seen much distinguished service. They are extremely powerful and accurate, with a very high level of reliability. The M249 fires the NATO 5.56mm round, and will even accept M16 magazines in an emergency, though it is usually carried with a 200 round, box magazine. The Minimi is also used by a number of other NATO countries.
